Should I look for SH3?
« on: August 26, 2010, 09:08:07 PM »
I've had SH4 for around 2 years I think but still know next to nothing about navigation & targeting. In the past I've found it a bit overwhelming and have avoided subs and gravitated to flying sims instead.
I have SH4 and the Monsun mod and have now installed Carotio's radio mod. I refuse to buy SH5 as long as there is the internet connection requirement.
I'm wondering though if I should go on a quest to find SH3, just to have it. I understand some features are done better than SH4 even though it's an older sim.

Years ago I tried Jane's 688 Attack Sub which had quite a following at the time. Unfortunately I never got a grip on the navigating and targeting then either.  hammer35

Welcome to SHMF  thup1

Silent Hunter 3 has good and bad things about just as SH4
I myself find it more of an involved game play then SH4 offers
But a lot of people like SH4 better it’s just down to your taste
There are a large amount of Mods around for SH3 for you to try
And if you keep your eyes open in the bargain bin you may find
SH3 at a next to nothing price.

I played SH5 and got totally bored of it so unless you really like the
Look of it I would not bother  realno

It's a matter of taste.
For a skipper career, you have to play SH4.
For a kaleun career, you can either play SH3 or SH4 if you have the u boat add on, and if you add OM.

SH4 does have its advantages: it runs mores smoothly, has better radio options, better graphics and better campaign.
SH3 is older, which clearly can be seen on the graphic side, but you have all uboats functioning and the schnorkel works as do the other elements.

You can get CTD with both games, but most of them are eliminated in SH4, it's just mod related now, and in SH3: watch out in the Black Sea area when looking at the map. Save your game before you look at the map.

Before you write me a pm, ask yourself, if it ain't better to write it in the forum. It usually is.

I personally like SH3 over all the other installments in the series (haven't played SH5 yet, nor will I until they release an internet-free, most-bugs-fixed version). With the GWX 3.0 Gold pack, it's even more incredible. If you like subsims, it's well worth the money, in my opinion.

Hello

I like silent hunter 4 more then 5, less then 3 without the current mods. Since i found out,( got silent hunter 4 for a few years now ) that all those nice mods where around ive been playing SH4 more then ever. The mods realy finishes the game, most of all if you like playing with u-boats .
I got silent hunter 5 also from the release and whas very disapointed in the game, because i exspected more SH3 gameplay and action, and it runs like crap comparing to SH4 with mods. I personally play sh4 more then others, because is good balanced for system and nice grahpics thanks to the mod makers j12.
SH5 is running is slow motion(action) compared with SH3 and SH4.

There has been some fine mod work done for SH III that makes it equal to even SH V in some ways, you can get the animated sub pens start, full interior, well more of it, not as full as SH V but a lot more than vanilla and open hatches, and many mods for environemnt and add ons of all kinds. With the mega mod add ons it is a fine sim indeed and well worth owning.

And if you're into surface ships, Chinese U-47's various surface ship mods have all you need to turn SH3 into a very fun game of commerce raiding with big guns. :)

SH3 is very cheap to buy, so the best thing is to go out and get it and have SH3 and SH4 installed and play which one you want...best of both worlds!
