I've spotted a torpedo bug with SH4. When playing Type IXc boats, you have the option of manually adjusting the depth, speed and trigger settings for your torpedoes with a screen that is similar to the F6 screen so beloved by SH3 players. All well and good, but I was finding that all of my torpedoes were inexplicably missing their targets. I think I've worked it out. In SH4, when you lock onto a target the AI appears to give your torpedoes a depth setting appropriate to the target's draft & assuming that you'll be firing a magnetic torpedo. All well and good, you may think, & set your torpedo to impact & a nice shallow run. The trouble is, that if you lose the lock on your target & then regain it, the torpedo's depth is re-set to the AI (deep running) default, but keeps the trigger setting you chose. Result: the torpedo runs deep on an impact setting & is likely to run under the target without going off. This problem is particularly noticeable in rough weather where you keep losing lock with your target due to waves splashing over your periscope. Unfortunately, those are just the weather conditions where I'd appreciate being able to select my own depth settings. Until someone comes up with a mod to fix this [please?], my solutions are to: (a) use magnetic torpedoes in rough weather [no good in early war fights], or (b) raise my sub up so that my periscope doesn't get splashed [dangerous if escorts are around]. It's also a good idea to switch to the attack screen just before firing to check that your torpedoes' depth settings haven't changed.
