As I have been away from SH3 for a number of years, which is the best current supermod to try

AFAIK, LSH and NYGM are the only two supermods, which still has more or less support and production going on.
GWX and WAC seems to have reached their gold edition, and if anything is added for them, it's either from old team members or stand-alone modders.

My recommendation would be LSH. Notice that SHMF only has the 4th version here. The 5th version is linked to the website of the team. That's how they wanted it, when the previous team leader retired.

LSH adds lots of ships, new ports and both random and historical traffic.

LSH is a great mod to play but be aware it uses a lot of system resources
you will need to find and use the 4GB patch to help it run   thup1

Got hold of a starforce free SH3 (£3.81 inc postage) and decided to load it with LSH.
Everything runs well - except for the sluice gates closing on me - never seen them before.
Good to play SH3 with a nice mod after so long away - not played properly since Dec 09
So thanks very much for the advice folks

Then we are in the same boat, so to speak. Read my thread "longest shore leave ever".

That career I have resumed was a new career too.
Once starting up on August 1st, I quit right away, ending the first war patrol.
That way, it's possible to upgrade the boat before the war starts.
Then 2nd patrol you start August 3rd. Plenty of time to get out on sea and be on station when the war breaks out.

Anyway, my 2nd patrol I just played untill I got to my area and saved. That was February 4th 2010. Since then I haven't played the game... You know, the usual real life stuff getting in the way... And if I played, it was in the Pacific with SH4.
