Forum FAQ, rules & how to register
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:08:16 AM »

Advantages of SHMF:
1) There's room for all mods made for the entire community to use.
2) Downloads of the most popular mods are fast and free. This includes supermods and radiomods.
3) All versions of Silent Hunter: 3+4+5
4) Both Atlantic and Pacific theater have mods represented.
5) SHMF is multi-lingual: English, Deutsch, Français, Castellano, Italiano & Dansk/Skandinavisk are allowed sofar. By permitting more languages, we'll gain the option of broader perspective of potential users.
6) If mod makers are able to make videos of their mods & upload to youtube, embedding a video in a release post is also an option. One just has to post the youtube url & automatically it's embedded.
7) The name is important too. Just make a google search of "silent hunter mods" and you'll see SHMF is one of the top search results, together with subsim. Using more than one host is never a stupid idea. Subsim offers hosting too. Maybe SHMF should be YOUR optional choice next time... sm09

FAQ - mods
The site and forum have been prepaid till January 2012 with relative unlimited space and unlimited traffic per month.
And what does relative unlimited space means? It means that the mods hosted now are secured on a fast server, mostly paid out of my own pocket plus a few donations, and thus any future hosting of mods rely on donations. Else the storage will require an external free host such as mediafire or whatelse.
The donations are however stricly volontary, and guests or members are not required to donate in order to download.
Hosting of mods in SHMF is free and they will never be deleted in my life time.  2thup
All current mods hosted in SHMF are downloaded from direct links and as fast as your connection allows.

Anyone, who wish to have their mods hosted with me, can:
1) get a personal ftp account, permanent or temporary depends how often you'll need it. Any modmaker can get help in a subforum for modmakers.
2) choose if you want your mods guest accessible or for members only. Mods containing music in any way are required to be members only.

FAQ - general
- Free speech is a universal right in the free world, but under personal responsability. Basically that means you can talk about anything you want, curse if you must, and also express feelings against anything and anybody. BUT if someone feels offended, and the admin decides that a member stepped over the invisible line, then expect a temporary or ever-lasting ban. Other places operate with a 3rd offence is the last one policy. That does not imply here at SHMF. It depends on the nature of the offence. Repeating the same offence over and over and ignoring the warning of the admin is a perfect road to eternal ban.
- Stalking one or more members is also a one-way ticket to the abyss. So behave nicely.  sm09
- Temporary ban will probably be for one week, two weeks, three weeks, four weeks etc etc
- More inputs will be written later

Donations?
Unfortunately, it has now become necessary. I have prepaid my host till mid January 2012. The service right now includes storage of 60-70gb and unlimited traffic. Right now, this site has been paid out of my own pocket, but I cannot keep afford this kind of amount without support.  If this site is to endure hosting the most popular mods, SHMF will need your help. If I don't get enough donations, I'll downgrade my account, and take off the big mods from my own account and let them be hosted in free places. That means they will still be available through SHMF, only at a much slower speed...

Avatars and signatures
Avatar size limit is 65*65 pixels. Any larger and the forum software will reject it.
Signature size limit is for now set to 150 pixels high and 500 pixels long. Please don't exagerate it if you cross the limits a bit.

I have permanently removed the mail activation process, and out of fairness activated all the accounts not allready activated. If you for some reason have made two accounts, then please contact me in order to secure a single account pr IP adress/pr user. I'm not fond of users with several accounts.  2guns

To ensure anti-spam procedures, I have activated the post activation system for new users. So the first few times, you make a post, you will have to enter a capcatscha and answer the 4 questions. Sorry, but I don't wanna spend too much time cleaning the forum from spam bots.  shady1
